Geography

Geography is a foundation subject in the National Curriculum. At Bishop Lonsdale, we offer the children a broad and balanced curriculum which builds on their knowledge, skills and understanding of geography each year. Geography is taught through a series of themes which allow the children to investigate a variety of people, places and environments at different scales in the United Kingdom and further afield.

Pupils develop their knowledge of people and places in order to understand the physical, social and economic forces which define those places and the lifestyles of the people who live there. We study local areas and issues, extending these studies into the wider world. The children learn to use maps, atlases, photographs and the internet to explore the environment of the countries which they study. They will also build on a range of investigative and problem solving skills both inside and outside the classroom, such as learning to use a compass or developing the ability to measure and track changes in the weather. They then use the skills they have developed in Literacy, Maths and ICT to report and record their findings.
