Handwriting

In our Early Years Foundation Stage, Reception children take part in daily handwriting practice, while Nursery children engage in regular fine motor and mark-making sessions to support the development of fine motor control, letter formation, and early writing confidence.

Nursery begins the year with Dough Disco to build finger strength and coordination through fun, music-based movement. As the year progresses, they move on to Write Dance, which incorporates large and small movements, music, and mark-making to further develop the physical skills needed for writing.
In line with the rest of the school, Reception follows the Kingston Cursive handwriting scheme. This provides a consistent approach to letter formation and supports a smooth transition into joined writing as children progress through school.

Across the EYFS, we offer a wide range of fine motor, mark-making, and writing opportunities through continuous provision. These are carefully planned to spark children’s interest in writing, strengthen their physical control, and embed key early literacy skills in meaningful, play-based contexts. Whether indoors or outdoors, children are encouraged to explore a variety of writing tools and surfaces, developing their skills at their own pace with the support of skilled practitioners.
